Hong Kong Cool Growing Season (September-April)
Water deeply at least once a week to keep roots growing deep and the soil moist
Grow it in a container that has at least 12 inches (30cm) deep
Plant the seedlings roughly 18-24 inches apart
Watch for outbreaks of aphids, which often gather in clusters within the folds of frilly kale leaves. Treat small problems with insecticidal soap. Pick off and discard badly infested leaves.
Kale has more than 50 different types, and in addition to green, it also comes in white, purple, and a bluish-green shade.
Kale is a good source of plant-based calcium, needed for strong bones and teeth, and has low levels of a natural compound called oxalate, which makes the calcium more available for absorption.
