Programme description:

This series of two classes will focus on popular cool and warm season crops that you can grow at home here in Hong Kong. This course provides a deep-dive into a six vegetables / herbs, providing you with the knowledge you need to grow them successfully in your own home garden.

 

 

  • Workshop I (30 Jan) - Growing your own: Kale, Broccoli and Parsley

    • During the first session of the intermediate course, you will learn everything about how to grow popular cool season crops that are packed with nutrients, and are known for their health benefits. Kale and broccoli are superfoods, and while parsley is better known for being a garnish, it is rich in antioxidants, making these plants an excellent choice to grow for yourselves and your family during this cooler season.

    • Topics covered include:

      • Overview of kale & broccoli and parsley

      • Types of kale suited for Hong Kong climate

      • Best conditions for growing kale, broccoli and parsley – soil, sunlight, water, fertilizer

      • How to grow kale, broccoli and parsley in the Hong Kong climate (germination, watering techniques, fertilizing techniques, harvesting)

      • Typical pests and diseases for kale, broccoli and parsley, and how to treat them using organic practices.

      • Making kale, broccoli and parsley seedlings to take home to grow.

 

 

 

  • Workshop II (20 Feb) - Growing your own: Eggplant, Cucumber and Italian Basil

    • The warmer season will be coming up in a couple of months, and this is the time to plan the summer crops to grow in your garden. Eggplants are such versatile vegetables and go so well with different cuisines, and summer is the best time for them to thrive. Cucumber is much easier to grow at home than you would imagine, but they take a while to be ready for harvest, so it’s important to start early! Italian Basil is such a fragrant and perfect complement for many dishes, and why not start growing your own to supplement your cooking as and when you like it?   

    • Topics covered include:

      • Overview of Eggplant, Cucumber and Italian Basil.

      • Best conditions for growing these crops – soil, sunlight, water, fertilizer

      • How to address the challenges of growing these crops in summer – heat, humidity, rain, pests and diseases.

      • How to grow eggplant, corn and Italian Basil in the Hong Kong climate (germination, watering techniques, fertilizing techniques, companion planting and harvesting)

      • Typical pests and diseases for eggplant, corn and Italian Basil and how to treat them using organic practices.

      • Making eggplant, cucumber and Italian Basil seedlings / cuttings to take home to grow.

 

Price:

  • HKD380/class; HKD700 for both classes

    • Participants will be given seed pots with seeds of the covered crops during the class to take home to nurture.
